Many dogs and cats, and especially puppies and kittens, will try anything at least once, so keep small items—electrical cords, batteries, table or party favors, Styrofoam and plastic cups and tableware, children’s toys, and so on—out of your pet’s reach. You’ll cut the risk of choking and intestinal blockage tremendously—and enjoy some peace of mind.
If you’re traveling and are leaving your pet at a professional animal-care facility, tell the kennel managers about any special dietary needs your pet may have and/or medications your pet takes on a regular basis. Ask if it would be a good idea to drop off your pet’s own food, as well. Ask whether you may also bring along your pet’s favorite toy or bedding, or for extra reassurance, an item from home that carries your familiar scent (such as an old T-shirt.)
